CITY OVERVIEW

1. Location and Geographical Features

Fukuroi City is located in western Shizuoka prefecture, with the city of Kakegawa lying to the east, the city of Iwata lying to the west, and town of Mori lying to the north. In addition, the city is traversed by the Tokaido Shinkansen, Tokaido Line, Tomei Expressway, National Highway Route 1, National Highway Route 150 and other major transportation arteries, having extremely favorable transportation conditions connecting it to Tokyo 240 kilometers away and Osaka 320 kilometers away. The region has an abundance of expansive rural areas and beautiful green tea plantations, and is blessed with a rich natural environment consisting of the Ohta river and the Haranoya River and the Enshu Rapids to the south. Land use as of 2011 consisted of 17.2% residential, 36.2% agricultural and 19.5% mountainous woodlands. The land is extremely flat, making geographical conditions favorable for land utilization.

2. Climate

Since Fukuroi City lies on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, its climate is typical of other Pacific coastlines, having mild temperatures and heavy rainfall. During the summer, there are many rainy days due to the high temperature and humidity levels brought on by winds from the south. During the winter, seasonal winds from the west bring an abundance of clear weather with low temperatures and dry air. The cold wind called "Enshu Karakkaze", characteristic of this region, blows during the winter months making it feel colder than it actual temperature.

In addition, this region also has one of the longest durations of sunshine in the country, and with an average annual temperature from 16 to 17 degrees Celsius, offers a comfortable environment throughout the year.

3. Land Area

Fukuroi City extends roughly 15 km east to west and roughly 17 km north to south, covering a land area of 108.33 square kilometers and accounting for 1.4% of the total land area of the prefecture. In addition, it also has 86.10 square kilometers of habitable land area that accounts for 79.5% of its total land area, making it an extremely flat region.

4. Population

According to the National Census of 2015 Fukuroi has a population of 85,789, and according to the basic resident register, the population as of April 2016 had reached 87,174. In addition, the 2014 Fukuroi birthrate of 10.8 (per 1000 residents) exceeds the prefectural average of 7.7 by 3.1.

Furthermore, the ratio of elderly residents in Fukuroi was 22.4% as of 1 October 2015, placing it at a 5.4% lower ratio than the prefectural average of 27.8%. In addition, with an average resident age of 43.9 as of 1 October 2015, 3.1 years younger than the prefectural average of 47.0, Fukuroi is one of the youngest areas in the prefecture.

5. Industry

According to the 2015 National Census, 4.3% of the labor force was engaged in primary industries while 40.3% and 52.6% were in secondary and tertiary industries respectively in Fukuroi City, making it a successful producer within the prefecture.
